I’ve noticed for a while that quite a few ‘popular’ blogs have advertising on them. I passed it off as a phase which wouldn’t last long. But, apparently there’s a few bloggers making a fairly good living out of their online popularity. The San Francisco Chronicle has an article titled “Bloggers find ways to profit.”
I used to slag off any bugger who tried to make a quick buck via their blog. These days, however, I don’t tend to mind too much. That is unless the advertising is intrusive or starts creeping it’s way into the individual posts on the blog. I see blog advertising comparable to the advertising that you’d see on SBS. It’s there but you can ignore it and go for a pee or something (as opposed to commercial television which has upwards of 13 minutes of advertising in 5 or 6 breaks per hour – which in my view encourages alcoholism, because drinking shedloads of beer is the only way you can be excused for going to the loo 5 or 6 times per hour). Huh? Yeah. OK. My blog has no ads on it yet. But I’m waiting for my inner Jonathon Shier to come along and attempt to root everything up.

It seems that every AFL game I go to ends up being a one-sided affair. This afternoon I caught the train 2 stops down to the MCG and saw Adelaide poo all over Hawthorn. I felt very sorry for the bloke pictured below. Being a Richmond follower, I’ve been to far too many games like the one today.

If you’re after some good Timothy Leary downloads, head here.
Likewise, for William S. Burroughs downloads, head over here.
Don’t worry. There’s no acid going down at home tonight. Just beer.

You have to wonder what the hell is going on down at Spencer St. when one of the day’s top stories is about an angry worker pissing in his workmate’s water bottle. Then ending up in court over doing it. Who cares? And more importantly, why am I linking to it? I don’t know.

Wordpress is in the house. I had a few problems (the worst being all link markup being minced) performing the import but after clearing the database a couple of times and performing a search and replace on my import file, all seems to be OK.
The one thing that is irking me about this system is the PHP business. I have tried making my own index.php template but rogue bits of lists keep popping up. An li here and a ul there. Until I figure out how to get my page looking half respectable again, I will be using a template that I found here.

All this ‘root moveable type’ stuff has confused me no end. I’m no whizz as far as all this database, php, sql stuff goes. That makes it hard for me to swap an entire blog over to another content management system. I have Wordpress on the go. I like it. I also got my inquisitive fingers on ExpressionEngine. It looks very handy as well.
For the time being I’m going to keep whacking away on the keyboard with my current MT setup and explore my two other options. Maybe I’m the type of person that SixApart hope to cash in on. That is, someone who has become loyal because they know no other way of putting together a blog. Loyal isn’t the correct word, maybe reliant.
Much like me, they are in business and can’t be expected to offer a good product for nothing. Goodwill don’t pay the bills! It’s their call and it’s got to be said that Moveable Type is a very well developed blogging tool. However, if there’s a cheaper (or better still, free) option out there for educated customers, it’s only natural that people will flow the way of a cheaper product. Wordpress is two lengths clear in the race for my reliance.

I suppose it was destined to happen.
As noted by anyone else who keeps a blog, Moveable Type has gotten very expensive all of a sudden. The free version will still be available but with limited functions. That craps me off. I’ve just gotten Wordpress up and running in this directory. It’ll take a fair bit of fiddling to get used to the new system, but I must move on. I’ve given myself 3 months change over to Wordpress.

I know I haven’t got any copyright notices on this page or any other page on this site. I don’t have an issue with anyone using an image or a quote from this site for personal or commercial use. As if anyone would want to repeat my blurb anyway. But the one thing I hate is when somebody can’t be arsed saving an image file of mine onto their own host server. You see, I was sitting there watching my site statistics while one non-descript image of mine was being hit hundreds of times per day. Upon investigation I discovered that an English site was using one of my images on their site, by linking directly to its URL. That’s just lazy.
So I decided to change the image. What else could I do? The image changed from this…

to this…

Then I fired off an email to the ‘webmaster.’
The image corresponding to story entitled “Beautiful London streets appreciating in value” is entirely inappropriate. Disgusting.
I received this reply.
Thank you for bringing that to my attention. The offending image has been deleted and I can assure you that I have no idea how that picture came to be on our site. The only explanation that I can think of is that our hosting became compromised. Please accept my apologies.
“Hosting became compromised” my arse! And they deleted the image as well! Sheesh!

How to write like a wanker. It’s worth a read. I’m already quite successful at writing like a wanker so I’ll pass on studying this document.

A blog from the US has this gem. It’s a table that compares average state IQ vs which candidate won the vote in the 2000 presidential election for that state. It’s hardly a quality controlled survey, but it’s probably true…
No matter how clever you are, this IQ test will disappoint you once you’ve finished it. And if you’ve got a high intelligence quotient anyway and don’t need to do a quiz, you’ll be smart enough to tell me why it is that when one lightglobe in my house goes kaput, all the others follow – even the flouro globes. Bugger it! I can’t pee in the dark. Let me clarify that. I can pee, I just can’t aim.

Many people cannot stand Tim Blair (no link supplied – do a search for his blog if you really want to). He doesn’t really bother me because he is an arrogant, self-obsessed fool and I attempt to avoid people like that as often as I can. Every now and again however, I have to take a peek and see what conspiracy he’s unwrapped/which journo is now a ‘pinko’. The other day he had a glaring mistake/piece of misinformation in one of his posts. I pointed it out politely in his comments section and subsequently, the post was removed.
The conservative ‘leaders’ he admires so much have taught him well. When confronted with evidence contrary to what he would like to have his subjects believe, he buries it.
He’ll be the Prime Minister one day with form like that.
