Core promises.

A friend of mine was walking to work in inner-northern Melbourne and came across a pile of dog crap with one of those little flags plugged into a knob of doggy do-do. On it was written ‘Core Promise’ along with a picture of John Howard. Priceless. Sorry for the low quality – it was dark when taken apparently.

John Howard's Core Promise

Jabba Jabba hey hey.

Friggin’ hell! Where has this year gone?

It’s already the heavier side of August and I have barely had the time to update this blog. This is mainly due to working two jobs, a full time State Government position and a personal enterprise. My personal escapades take up just as many hours in a week as the full time (38hr week) government job, so weekends become extremely valuable and ‘do abso-fucking-lutely nothing’ time becomes very precious indeed.

Another couple of reasons would be politics and my immediate environment. Most people that know me well know that I’m  left of centre and enjoyed a verbal stoush about political issues at any time. Now, well, I couldn’t care less. We have wankers for leaders (Labor, Liberal, Green and Democrat) and no major political party can, or has the will to undo the societal demolition job that John Howard has embarked on over the last 11 years. And my immediate environment of Brisbane has been, let’s say, a fair bit more sanitised and suburbanised than my life in Melbourne. I see Melbourne as a progressive, daring and creative city whereas I see Brisbane as a very conservative, up-tight and in most cases an unconscious city- a city that’s not sure if it wants the variety and spontaneity of life, let alone the moderately radical subcultures that can be born from a diverse and tolerant metropolitan area.

I am struggling with a direction for this blog right now. I would like it to have a direction otherwise it has no more use on the web than a MySpace page or even worse, a Facebook page. Argh!

Subsidised blogging.

In an age when a simple blog is seen as so ofay, Ben has started a travel blog.

Ben is a friend of mine from Melbourne who took off for London a few years ago for a working holiday and has ended up travelling (and working) for a little bit longer than he planned.

I’m hosting it for him for the time being, so enjoy it…may I present accidentaltourist.

Baby steps.

After 20 months in Brisbane I have finally taken my first baby step back to Melbourne – by joining the Richmond Football Club’s official Brisbane chapter. Basically it involves watching Richmond games with fellow beer swilling footy fans at an  inner-city Brisbane pub followed by fierce arguments about everything AFL.

It shouldn’t be too long before I make my way back to Melbourne. The move’s catered for in the latter stages of a five-year plan. Brisbane’s a lovely place, but it’s only problem is that it’s full of Queenslanders (no offence to my Queensland friends, but you know you’re all exempted from that last statement anyway – don’t you?).
