OK. Get ready to call me a know-all. A generalising turd. An unpatriotic bastard. Feel free to let me have it – I am quite happy to be a punching bag for frustrated suburban princes/princesses.
Being constantly frustrated with listening to ill-considered views of people around me, today I heard the most stupid reason for a Brisbane resident to consider Melbourne a bad place to live. No it wasn’t the age old ‘weather’ argument (which was brought up), and neither was it the surf and beaches argument (which was brought up – although Brisbane is at least 75 km from the nearest decent beach). The reason given to justify judging Melbourne is an inferior city to live in was that it is the highest recipient of immigrants in Australia (…insert groan here…).
Now, I’m not saying that either city is better or worse. In the conversation I was having at the time I was simply airing my opinion that Melbourne was my preference and that one day soon I will move back (I currently live in Brisbane). To suggest that immigrants make a place uninhabitable is absurd.
I have resided in London, Paris, Oslo, Stockholm, Melbourne and Brisbane over the past 16 years since flying from my parents’ nest. Each city seemed to have a problem with newcomers which was fairly close to the surface in conversations with locals, but without doubt Australians have the biggest problem.
Seeing as Australia is a nation of immigrants, it is absolutely amazing that we seem so scared of social change, new ideas and customs. Honestly, unless you’re an indigenous Australian you are most certainly a descendent of an immigrant.
But, I hear you cry, you are generalising. The majority of Australians are accepting people.
No they are fucking not! The majority of this country’s citizens are wrapped up in a world of real estate speculation, credit card debt and ‘A Current Affair’ at 630pm where injustice is a used car salesman or an unprofessional pest controller. The real injustice in Australia is that the average citizen perceives an immigrant’s mobility and will to succeed as a direct threat to Australia’s quality of life. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Multiculturalism. If you can’t spell it, don’t criticise it.
