bandwidth theft

I know I haven’t got any copyright notices on this page or any other page on this site. I don’t have an issue with anyone using an image or a quote from this site for personal or commercial use. As if anyone would want to repeat my blurb anyway. But the one thing I hate is when somebody can’t be arsed saving an image file of mine onto their own host server. You see, I was sitting there watching my site statistics while one non-descript image of mine was being hit hundreds of times per day. Upon investigation I discovered that an English site was using one of my images on their site, by linking directly to its URL. That’s just lazy.

So I decided to change the image. What else could I do? The image changed from this…

to this…

Then I fired off an email to the ‘webmaster.’

The image corresponding to story entitled “Beautiful London streets appreciating in value” is entirely inappropriate. Disgusting.

I received this reply.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. The offending image has been deleted and I can assure you that I have no idea how that picture came to be on our site. The only explanation that I can think of is that our hosting became compromised. Please accept my apologies.

“Hosting became compromised” my arse! And they deleted the image as well! Sheesh!

Hehe, cute dogs. The golden one seems to be thinking about something else entirely.
Facing the same potential situation I opted for ‘image appears broken’ measure — the longer I sat thinking of an image that would appear universally disturbing I realised that someone somewhere is gonna get turned on by any default image I slotted in … and undoubtedly those people would hotlink me.

Heh. I think I once did up a huge 2000×1500 pixel green and pink thing saying “I Am A Bandwidth Stealing Dickhead”…

Ha! I should’ve done thaat as it was a large English financial services company that was leaching my site. How stupid could they (or rather, their web services contractors) be?

I had a similar problem with one Timothy Blair. Before, after. He doesn’t post images at his blog now, so I guess he’s learned his lesson.
